Chapter 68: A VISIT FROM A FRIEND
"Don’t be like this Frank. Calling our family cursed is going overboard, Harlow is the cursed one, not us." Elisa said calmly. She has always known that girl to be cursed.
"I should have asked a few guards to help you out with your plans that day. You see, Harlow has a little mental problem that I and Frank have kept to ourselves for so long." She added.
"You knew that girl is sick and you still have her to me?" Frank yelled. You should get out of my room now before I do something stupid."
"A room my husband paid for. Your bills and everything you are Nathan is thanks to Frank." Elisa said. For long she has known Nathan as the man who Frank helped. The man who did his evil deeds and even hers too.
"I worked so hard to earn everything I have today. Just wait till the public gets to find out who you and your husband truly are." Nathan barked at her.
"Oh, oh... Oh... I’m so scared, Somebody save me..." Elisa said dramatically. She stared at the man pitifully. She thought she could use him for one last mission, but it seemed there was no redemption for his soul.
She can’t afford to keep him, the secrets Nathan knows cannot be let out. Not only does his words have substance, he also has enough evidence against them. Evidence that could ruin them for good.
This is the reason she loved working alone, people get too bold when they feel like they have so much against you. They tend to bite the hands that feed them.
"Say whatever you want, that wouldn’t change my mind."
"We’re not here to argue with you, Nathan." Elisa began.
"Then what are you here for?" Nathan adjusted himself on the bed, a few of the medical tools used on him had been removed.
"We’re here... For..." Elisa finally pulled her hands from her bag and walked next to him.
"Harlow is missing. She left the mansion the night she had hurt you..." Her words only turned the old man more furious than before.
"I want you to help me find her. Harlow cannot just be missing like that, we need to deal with her for whatever she has done to you."
"If you do this Nathan, you can have her as you like." Nathan’s laughter reverberated through the dimly lit room, a sinister edge lacing his voice.
"Mock me all you want, Elisa," he sneered. "But if you think I’m going to help you after the humiliation I’ve suffered, you’re gravely mistaken."
Elisa’s lips twitched into a strained smile, though her eyes betrayed her growing irritation. "Oh, Nathan," she said, her tone sickly sweet. "Don’t be so dramatic. What happened was unfortunate, yes, but Harlow is just a silly, impulsive girl. Once you help us find her, she’ll be yours to discipline as you see fit."
Nathan’s eyes darkened as he leaned forward, his voice a low growl. "Discipline? That girl didn’t just humiliate me, she mutilated me. Do you know what it feels like to lose a part of yourself, Elisa? To be laughed at, pitied, feared by those who once respected you?"
Elisa’s smile faltered, but she quickly recovered. "Nathan, let’s not dwell on the past. You and I both know this situation can be salvaged. Frank and I are prepared to ensure your... reputation is restored. All you have to do is help us find her."
Nathan scoffed, his gaze flicking to Claudia. "And what about her?" He jabbed a finger in her direction. "Do you think offering me this one will make me forget what your little darling did to me?"
Claudia stiffened, her hands balling into fists. She refused to lower herself to his level, but the sting of his words was undeniable. "I’m not here to replace anyone," she said coldly. "If you have a problem, take it up with Harlow. She’s the one who—"
"Enough!" Nathan bellowed, his voice louder than before. "You think I care which of you it is? I’ve had enough of the Blackwoods and your schemes. Frank may have helped me once, but I’m done being your pawn."
Elisa’s expression hardened, her patience finally snapping. "You forget your place, Nathan," she said sharply. "Without Frank, you’d still be rotting in that hole you came from. You owe us your very life, and now you think you can turn on us?"
Nathan’s eyes narrowed, a dangerous glint flashing in them. "Owe you? The only thing I owe is revenge. And believe me, Elisa, if you think you can intimidate me, you’re sorely mistaken."
"You can leave now, I don’t want to speak to you anymore." He suddenly said. Elisa smiled. She had tried to be reasonable, to give him a last chance at life but it seems things will not work out the way she planned.
There is no need to keep Nathan alive anymore. He’s no longer of use to her or Frank.
Without hesitation, Elisa moved closer, her hand sliding into the bag at her side. In one swift motion, she plunged a needle into his shoulder, injecting a clear liquid. Nathan’s reaction was instantaneous, his body jerking in surprise as his hand flew to the puncture site.
"What, what did you give me?" he stammered, his voice rising in alarm. He staggered back, his face contorting with pain as an unnatural heat spread through his body immediately. His breaths grew labored, his limbs trembling uncontrollably.
Elisa stepped back, observing his suffering with a detached calm. "You know what it is, Nathan," she said coldly. "The same thing you gave to Arcadia. Don’t tell me you’ve forgotten already."
His eyes widened in realization, and for a fleeting moment, fear overtook his usual bravado. "You...you wouldn’t..." he gasped, his voice breaking as his knees buckled.
Elisa leaned in, her tone sharp and unyielding. "Did you think I’d let you ruin my family? Did you think I’d let you expose who we are? What I am?" Her voice was calm, almost eerily so, as Nathan convulsed violently. Blood and foamy saliva spilled from his mouth, staining the pristine carpet beneath him.
Claudia smiled, at least she would no longer be forced to marry him anymore.
She had no idea what her father was thinking, but forcing her to marry this man was so out of line.
Once Elisa was sure the man was dead, both she and her daughter stepped out of the room quietly before anyone noticed.
