Chapter 8: Lin Chu, You Should Just Volunteer to Quit
He said, “I’ll spend time with you every day. What would you like to eat tomorrow?”
He said, “I’ll take care of you from now on.”
He had said many things, but she had forgotten most of them. She could not remember clearly his weird and funny voice when he was going through a voice change during puberty. However, she vaguely remembered him being a mess the first time she met him, and how hard he had tried to hide his embarrassment. She remembered the proud look on his face and the gentleness in his eyes.
After having a rough sleep due to her nightlong dreams, she was almost late for work. Before heading out, she looked at her face and the slap mark was almost gone and not as obvious as before. She managed to cover it up completely with some foundation and light makeup.
She made it to her workplace right on time and immediately sat down to switch on the computer. The female colleague sitting across her was also an intern who just recently joined the company. She was working in the planning department of a public relations company.
The company was only a medium-sized enterprise and it was not well-known. Even so, the competition was fierce. Between the two interns, only one of them could eventually become a permanent employee. Their relationship was not great, but at least none of them played any nasty tricks on one another.
“Why are you only here now? Manager You came by just now and he didn’t look pleased when he saw that you weren’t here,” Zhu Jingjing said, pretending to look worried. “It’s only our internship period now, your daily performance would be taken into account as part of your final assessment result. You may be eliminated in the end because of all these seemingly trivial mistakes that you made.”
“I was stuck in traffic, but at least I wasn’t late, was I?” Lin Chu said calmly.
“Oh, I almost forgot that you’re the precious daughter of the Lin family. Of course you wouldn’t treat your job seriously. You’re just here to pass time. Unlike the rest of us who are struggling to make ends meet, relying on our jobs just to make a living.”
“If that’s the case, why don’t you volunteer to quit? You don’t really need the small amount of money that you get paid here, but I need it.”
Initially, no one knew about Lin Chu’s real identity. However, the Lin family had an event recently and her identity was reported on the news along with the event. The Lin family loved using her to parade their kindness and to build a good reputation, so her name and even her photos were seen on the news.
At that moment, Lin Chu responded flatly, “I’m adopted.”
Still, that never stopped Zhu Jingjing from jumping at every opportunity to make sarcastic and scornful remarks about her.
“Who’s to say that people who were born into a rich family couldn’t work hard on their own? Besides, I’m just an adopted child with no prominent family background to rely on. No one would care if I lose my job, I need this job as much as you do. Stop asking me to quit, let this be a fair competition.” Lin Chu shrugged Zhu Jingjing off and proceeded to key in her login ID and password.
“Lin Chu, Zhu Jingjing, there’s a business dinner tonight with Ding Shang’s representatives and I want both of you to come with me. As both of you know, Ding Shang is one of the restaurants that belong to the Yan Hui Group. If our company becomes its long-term business partner, it’s possible to work with Yan Hui in the future. Our company values this deal a lot, read up on the documents and be well prepared. Don’t make any mistakes later.” Manager You Weiwen walked to their desks and handed them the documents. “If any of you perform well this time, it will contribute greatly to your final assessment.”
