Chapter 43: Adopting a cat

Chapter 43: Adopting a cat

The woman sighed and shook her head, "There are only two clinics in Davenport, we are so booked and a pet like this needs extra care and love. Mr West, no Officer West, don’t you think that the kitten finding you was fate.

Fate?

Ravi looked at the kitten whose entire body was tensed up. Fate?

He might have used those words to comfort Arlen but for this kind of situation, to this child, that word was just an insult, it was a sharp sword.

"I do not believe in fate."

"You do not. Ah. It is a pity. We would put it up for adoption for a week and if nobody came. We would put it down, it would be painless but at least it would be better than letting it be a stray."

Ravi refused to be deceived by the fake treat, what kind of vet clinic would say such a thing? Putting down a kitten, she just wanted to scare him, but unfortunately for her, she had met her match.

"Meow."

The cat all but leaped towards Ravi. Ravi caught the kitten, it was really too thin, so light. He frowned and looked down at it.

Large cornflower blue eyes looked back at him. It cried again and acted coquettishly.

Ravi looked at it, astonished. Was this not a human? If he was not embarrassed, he was embarrassed for him.

But then again, this was just a child, hearing he might be put down must have scared him so much. He lifted the cat up, his eyes narrowed.

Should he just take him to the Captain? Their eyes were a little similar, although Arleb’s was far more beautiful. The fur was really soft, easy for his fingers to sink into.

"So, it is agreed then. You would adopt the kitten then, Officer West."

He never agreed to that.

"Okay. But you are done healing the kitten right? I will come next week to collect him." By that time, the kitten had recovered and the shape shifted away. Was he an orphan? Or maybe kidnapped from his family.

He had dealt with a case like that before. A demonic cultivator that kidnapped children from their homes and then slaughtered the entire family. The children are then raised to be his shadow slaves, dedicated and foolishly loyal. Could this be the case?

This is really too much for him. Should he put him in a basket and drop in front of Arlen’s or Lisa’s house but he did not even know where they lived, not to mention the kitten was still a member of the Infernal Covenant society. He did not doubt that Arlen would not hold it against him but that Hero Association, Ravi did not have the same trust towards them.

"There is no need. You see, my ability is healing animals. Your kitten is as good as new. You just need to fill this form, this form. I would give him the vaccines..."

"Wait. Are vaccines okay for humans as well?"

The doctor cocked her head but still answered him, "There should be no problem. You need to buy some cat food."

"Cat food?" This was a human.

"Don’t worry. I have that."

It was more troublesome than he expected but in twenty minutes, the kitten was in a cage and handed over to him.

"Be gentle with him, don’t forget I am not scared to come to Harlan every week to check the situation with cutie. Our vet will be keeping an eye on you."

So troublesome.

Ravi walked out with the cage and the bag filled with cat supplies that the doctor had convinced him to buy. Walking a far distance, he set down the cage and opened it.

"You would probably feel better alone. I am a stranger." Thinking for a bit, he took out five twenty-dollar bills and stuffed them in the bag filled with cat toys. "Have a nice day."

The roasted fish must have cooled down, even if he put it in the microwave or oven, it would not be as crisp as it should be. The rice cooker was stainless steel so it should be alright.

Ravi tried for two minutes to ignore it but he turned back. The kitten tried to hide but the bag it was dragging was too heavy, not letting him do it effectively. When it saw Ravi frowning at it, it left the bag and ran towards a trash bin, and hid behind it.

Ravi’s brows wrinkled. Ignore it. Ignore it. You are not the savior anymore. There are thousands of children suffering everywhere, you can not possibly save all of them.

"I know but as long as I can save the person in front of me, I will feel happy."

He was not that bright-eyed hero anymore. He was just so tired.

Ravi sighed, his voice echoing in the quiet alleyway.

"Come here!" He said loudly. freёwebnoѵel.com

The kitten was black with various patches of white littered around its body. Its head sneaked from the trash.

"Now!"

The cat walked towards Ravi, its step hesitant and slow. After one long minute, it stood in front of Ravi.

Ravi squatted down, not sure how to communicate. He wanted to ask the kitten to change back but he felt like that was not his place.

He placed two cat treats on the ground, "If you want to come with me, touch the left one."

The cat looked at him and was about to push the left one when Ravi interrupted him.

"I am not a particularly warm person. I would not cuddle you or be gentle but I would feed you and whenever you choose to leave, I would not mind. I would not send out a search party for you."

The cat hurriedly chose to push the left cat treat.

"I have a few rules."

The moment the word rules left his mouth, the hairs of the cat visibly raised and it moved back a few meters.

Ravi looked at it quietly, "If you make a mess, clean it yourself. If you need anything, try and communicate with me what you need. Don’t make so much noise at night, I like to sleep early."

The kitten continued to look at him with wary eyes, "If you disobey any of these rules. Your screen time would be reduced." He had seen it in one of the groups on Social media.

"If you do not have any problem with the rules, push the right one."

And like that, Ravi West, the resident retired hero adopted a cat.
